Life insurance and family protection can feel like a heavy topic, but sometimes one real story explains it better than a sales pitch.

In my years as an insurance advisor, I’ve seen it all, but nothing haunts me quite like the case of Martha. Her late husband was a good man, but he was always on the lookout for a scam, and he landed on the idea that life insurance fit the bill. He decided that paying extra for mortgage insurance was wasting his hard earned money. Instead he funneled every spare cent into extra mortgage payments, rejecting their financial advisor’s advice. I tell this true story in my book Proof Of Love.

When he passed away unexpectedly, Martha didn’t just lose her partner; she lost her safety net. She was left with a house that was not yet paid off and no liquid cash to keep the lights on or buy groceries. It was unnecessary suffering born from a common misconception about priority.

That experience etched a certain “advisor instinct” into my DNA. It’s a reflex I can’t always control, as my recent Uber driver discovered. I was headed home from the garage, making small talk with a driver who had recently immigrated here. He was hardworking and kind, proudly sharing that he was the sole provider for his stay-at-home wife and two toddlers.

Life Insurance and Family Protection for Young Families

My brain instantly went into “Code Red” mode. I started thinking about the specific hardships his wife would have to face if something happened to him—navigating a new country, alone, with no income and two small children. I couldn’t help it. I launched into a passionate plea for him to protect his family. He was hesitant, mentioning how expensive life in the city is, but I didn’t let up. I didn’t even try to sell him anything; I didn’t even leave a business card! I just leaned forward from the backseat and urgently begged him to find *someone* to help him set up a term policy.

When I later recounted this “heroic” intervention to my sister, she didn’t give me the standing ovation I expected. Instead, she burst out laughing. “Jane,” she gasped, “you’re going to get a one-star rating. Maybe two if you’re lucky. Nobody wants a side of existential dread with their Uber ride.”

So, if you see my Uber rating plummeting, just know it’s the price I pay for caring too much. I might be walking soon, but at least my conscience—unlike Martha’s husband’s mortgage—is fully cleared.

What This Story Reminded Me

This story reminded me that protection planning is not really about paperwork or policies. It is about the people who may be left behind if life changes suddenly.

For young families, especially families depending on one main income, life insurance and family protection planning can make a major difference. It can help protect the home, cover basic living costs, and give loved ones time to breathe during a very difficult period.

The goal is not to scare anyone. The goal is to start the conversation early, while there is still time to make calm and thoughtful decisions.

That is the heart of Proof of Love. It is not about a hard sell. It is about helping families and business owners think ahead, ask better questions, and organize the important details before they are urgently needed.

Sometimes one simple conversation can become the first step toward protecting the people who matter most.

Life insurance and family protection planning does not have to feel overwhelming. Sometimes it starts with one honest conversation, one simple question, and one decision to protect the people who depend on you most.
